“The Qur’an in English Verse” – Lecture and Webinar by Bruce Lawrence and Rafey Habib

When

10/11/2015
12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

The Institute of Ismaili Studies is pleased to announced the public lecture “The Qur’an in English Verse” by Prof. Bruce Lawrence (Duke University) and Prof. Rafey Habib (Rutgers University).

Doubters have declared that the Qur’an is resolutely Arabic, and that any translation can only deliver its meaning, but not its tone and timbre in Arabic. We, however, are committed to producing an English translation of the Qur’an that might actually move people, awaken their feelings, create in them a definite mood, or induce a sense of the beauty and sublimity of the original — in short, a poetic translation, with its distinctive yet subtle voice.

To this end we will review three Qur’anic suras that embody our approach: Sūrat al-Fātiḥa (Q. 1), Sūrat Yā Sīn (Q. 36) and Sūrat al-Raḥmān (Q. 55).

DATE: Tuesday 10 November 2015, 17:00 GMT

VENUE: The Institute of Ismaili Studies, 210 Euston Rd NW1 2DA, London (Multipurpose Room, 1st floor)
